Lil Wayne,
[Parental Advisory]
Universal Records (USA) CD RAP

| A one-time member of New
Orleans's Hot Boys, rapper Lil Wayne attained a new level of
confidence and skill on 2004's THA CARTER. That album
featured only a few guest shots (as opposed to typically
star-studded hip-hop records), and this 2005 sequel once
again keeps things focused on Wayne, with the MC flying solo
on almost every track. This uncluttered scenario, which
relies on a spare, yet distinctly Cash Money-style musical
backdrop, gives Wayne the freedom to let his laid-back
rhymes stretch out, as best revealed on the ominous
"Fireman" and the boastful "Best Rapper Alive." Clearly
Wayne knows how to work a winning concept, since THA CARTER
II stays true to both its predecessor and the relentless,
unapologetic spirit of Southern rap. |
| Fifth album from this
seasoned rap veteran features the red-hot first single
"Fireman". Guests include Baby, Mannie Fresh, Lil' Mo and
others. Explicit. |

Tha Carter [PA] 06/29/04
Lil Wayne,
[Parental

Universal Records (USA) CD
RAP
Retail: $13.95

Personnel: Lil Wayne
(rap vocals); Mannie
Fresh, Baby (rap
vocals).
Recording
information: Cash
Money Studios, New
Orleans, LA (2004);
Patchwerk, Atlanta,
Georgia (2004).
Lil' Wayne has been
in the national
spotlight since his
days as the youngest
member of the Dirty
South's Hot Boys. On
his fourth solo
record, THA CARTER,
Wayne is almost
wholly on his own.
There are no
big-name guest stars
(as with Petey
Pablo's memorable
turn on Wayne's
previous album),
only recurring shots
from producer Mannie
Fresh and Cash Money
head Bryan "Baby"
Williams. Lil'
Wayne's easy flow
speaks for itself;
in a relaxed
Southern manner, he
waits for the rhyme
to unfold before
unleashing a torrent
of lyrical lines,
with consistent,
understated beats
pulling the tracks
along. Not as "lil'"
as his name implies,
Wayne hits a peak
with "This Is the
Carter," a brash
track that captures
the essence of this
potent hip-hop
album. |
|
A
raw, uncut welcome
into his everyday
life. This time
around , he divides
microphone time with
his handpicked
partners in rhyme,
Squad Up, skilled
New Orleans emcees.

500 Degreez [PA] 07/23/02

Personnel: Lil'
Wayne, Big Tymers,
TQ, Baby, Petey
Pablo, Blaque,
Mannie Fresh,
Tateeze, Cristale
(rap vocals).
Recorded at
Patchwerk, Atlanta,
Georgia and Sony
Studios, New York,
New York.
Lil Wayne comes on
as hard as can be on
500 DEGREEZ,
throwing gangsta
imagery around like
Rip Taylor with a
fresh supply of
confetti. Still, no
matter how
strenuously he
underscores his
gangsta themes on
such representative
tracks as "Gangsta
S***," "F*** You,"
and "Way of Life,"
his hard-hitting
approach is offset
by a
subtle-yet-undeniable
sense of humor. For
one thing, there's
Wayne's voice
itself, which at its
most vituperative
has echoes of
Eminem's Jerry
Lewis-isms. Then
there's the
production, which is
laced throughout
with goofy ensemble
vocals and synth
riffs that bespeak a
deep devotion to the
street-cred quirk of
George Clinton. Such
guests as Baby, Big
Tymers, and TQ are
on hand to bolster
Wayne's
hard-as-nails image,
but he still can't
hide the sly grin
behind his thug-life
frown. |
|
Both
of his previous
releases are now
Platinum..and now
he's set to release
his third offering
"500
Degrees"..Featuring
the Big Tymers,
Petey Pablo, Blaque,
TQ, and Mannie
Fresh. It's already
blowing up at radio
and needs no Hypin'
at all. Featuring
the first
single,"Way Of Life"
with the
Big Tymers. |

RAP

Personnel includes:
Lil' Wayne,
Juvenile, B.G.,
Young Turk, Big
Tymers.
"It's Wayne baby."
The third member of
the successful Hot
Boys releases his
own solo effort
following the
group's critically
acclaimed album
GUERILLA WARFARE.
With his debut album
THA BLOCK IS HOT,
Lil' Wayne further
proves that the Cash
Money Click is
taking over in time
for the millennium.
Wayne's
southern-accented
vocals add that New
Orleans-style flavor
to all of his songs.
The rapper keeps his
production focus
in-house, as Mannie
Fresh once again
handles the boards,
delivering more of
that club-friendly
sound. And with the
help such talented
guest artists as
Juvenile, B.G.,
Young Turk, and the
Big Tymers, this
album lives up to
the expectations of
all loyal CMB fans. |
